Dr Crookston's Camden house offered for only the second time in 100 years

The historic Camden residence Dr Crookston’s house has been offered for sale for only the second time in the past 100 years, with price expectations of $1 million plus.

Located at 75 John Street, Camden, the two-storey Victorian residence has elevated views over Camden and the Blue Mountains.

Owners Paul and Margaret Bowring have owned the property for 33 years.

The Macarthur family originally built the house circa 1860s for their overseer Robert Druitt, but an angry bull killed him before he had the chance to live in the house.

The house's name come from its later ownership by Dr R.B. Crookston, who conducted his medical practice at the house from 1913.

Dr Crookston was the mayor of Camden from 1932-1934.

The property, last sold in 1979 for $145,000, comprises four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

There are 12-foot-high (3.7-metre-high) ceilings, ironbark floor boards, open fire places, French doors, antique light fittings and decorative cast-iron lace.

The grounds have a grass tennis court and rear stables converted into a double garage.

“We’ve had many happy times here with friends but it’s time for another family to enjoy the home now,” says Margaret Bowring.

Dr Crookston’s house is being sold by Stuart Davies from Ray White Macarthur Group Camden.

“This is a very special offering,” says Davies.

"Rarely does a property of this calibre come on to the market, let alone one situated so close to the heart of the town.”

The house on its 2,536-square-metre holding will be auctioned on December 1.
