Gowing's Retford Hall, Darling Point, penthouse gone
By
Jonathan Chancellor
The Retford Hall, Darling Point, penthouse of the late retailer arts philanthropist Mollie Gowing has been sold for $5.7 million.
Occupying the entire 18th level of the Thornton Street high-rise tower, the four-bedroom penthouse was on the market for the first time in 30 years. It sold at auction last night through Cooley Auctions. There were three bidders after five contracts. Bidding opened at $4 million, with two bidders taking its passed the undisclosed reserve. It has about 260 square metres of indoor-outdoor living space with harbour views. It had overly ambitious $7 million expectations when listed for November auction last year. It was listed by Tony Barron at Barron & Dowling Real Estate. "This dream blank canvas combines house sized proportions with panoramic point blank views of Sydney Harbour," according to Daphne Sauvage, the Raine & Horne Double Bay conjunction selling agent.
