The NSW Government has acquired the heritage listed Hadley Park Estate to ensure an important part of Western Sydney history will be protected, preserved and eventually opened up to the public.  

Minister for Planning and Housing, Anthony Roberts, said the Government had acquired the property from the Penrith Lakes Development Corporation. 

“Getting this property into public ownership has taken considerable effort, and it’s important we make sure the restoration work is done, and the needs of the community accounted for, before it is opened up to the general public. 

“Department of Planning and Environment will consult with the community to develop a management plan for the long-term future management of the estate."

Roberts told the 2Gb broadcaster Ray Hadley, whose family once owned the colonial estate, that the department was investigating options with the NSW Department of Industry on a training program for young apprentices and students to participate in the restoration work. 

Hadley Park was one of the oldest farming estates in Australia (above photo credit department of environment and planning).

The land comprises a farm house, a collection of farm buildings, a garden and a part man-made lake on the Nepean River floodplain.

Local member and the Minister for Western Sydney and Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres,noted the property was once home to Charles Hadley, a pardoned convict who settled in the Castlereagh area and began building his estate within 20 years of the first fleet arriving.  

The New South Wales Government heritage listed Hadley House at Castlereagh last June.

The homestead’s significance is one of Australia’s oldest farming estates.

But keeping it on the map for future generations has been a struggle.

The Castlereagh property has a special meaning for <a href="https://www.2gb.com/government-officially-signs-off-on-hadley-house-heritage-listing/" target="_blank">2GB broadcaster Ray Hadley</a>, belonging to his fourth great-grandfather Charles Hadley in the 18th century.

In February last year, the Penrith Lakes Development Corporation assured Ray that Hadley Park would be protected only to go back on its word.

Ray has previously thanked the Minister and the government for preserving the historic location.

“I think it’s very important, from my point of view, that we leave some sort of legacy into the future, where our children… can go and look at places and have a look and feel what it was like back then.”

NSW Heritage says it is difficult to overestimate the significance of this complex, "still extant in its original 1803 grant, and still in a remarkably unaltered condition".

Ray Hadley suggest the two storey building might be Australia's oldest two storey building, from 1806, and <a href="https://www.propertyobserver.com.au/https://www.flickr.com/photos/nikabuz/37058129814" target="_blank">maybe the oldest timber cottage known to survive in Australia</a>.

The area is now owned by the Penrith Lakes Development Corporation (PLDC) and is off-limits to the public.

The main farmhouse is an extremely rare surviving example of a jerkin head roof structure embodying a most unique and unusual timber structure and clad externally with brickwork.

The technical excellence of the timber roof structure is paralleled by Elizabeth Farm, Parramatta, Old Government House, Parramatta and St. Mathgew's Anglican Church, Windsor and because of this technical excellence the building cannot be described as vernacular.

Protecting our heritage in Millers Point

A property in Millers Point, not part of the NSW Government sell off, was passed in this week.
It was <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-terrace-nsw-millers+point-122544878">passed in at auction </a>on a vendor bid of $1.9 million for the 1882 Kent Street home.
The middle terrace in the revived three Carlson Terrace row was built in the Italian villa style of architecture.
The 99 sqm offering is located at the door of Observatory Hill and offers harbour views over Darling Harbour and Barangaroo from its rooftop terrace.
The home with elaborate parapet and cast iron roof balustrades has three bedrooms, one bathroom, a granite kitchen and walled courtyard.
Di Jones listing agent Elodie Fabre is still negotiating with a few buyers.
The home previously traded for $910,000 in 2008 before the renovation.
The property was privately owned when they purchased and it was before the Labor, the Liberal governments started releasing the other properties.

Millers Point terrace passed in

Gowrie House, Glenroy, once owned by a Phar Lap jockey, has been listed for sale.
The heritage-listed 1855 bluestone home was owned by one of the six jockeys who ever rode Phar Lap, Bobbie Lewis. He rode Phar Lap to third place in the 1929 Melbourne Cup.
He won four Melbourne Cups, eight Victoria Derbies, seven Crown Oaks and eight SAJC St Legers in a career spanning more than 40 years.
Inducted into the Victoria Racing Club’s Hall of Fame in 2002, the Bobbie Lewis Quality Handicap is run at Flemington every year in September.
His former home at 63 Gowrie Street, is listed at $2.1 million.

Bluestone with racing history at Glenroy

A rundown Redfern shack, has sold for $2.7 million before its scheduled auction, but at substantially less than initial hopes.
It hit the market with <a href="/news/59857-crumbling-redfern-shacks-hit-the-market-at-3-million" target="_blank">$3 million price hopes</a> early last month but these were later <a href="/news/60469-rundown-redfern-cottage-price-revised-to-2-5-million" target="_blank">revised to $2.5 million</a>.
The sale follows a quick burst of activity in the run down housing market.

Heritage-listed Redfern shack fetches $2.7 million pre-auction

A heritage-listed city fringe building in Melbourne's Ascot Vale built in 1880 has been sold for $1.8 million.
The commercial property, 403-405 Mt Alexander Rd, Ascot Vale, on the corner of Mt Alexander Road and Bank Street was built for the English Scottish and Australian Chartered Bank and designed by architects Terry and Oakden.
It is one of only ten Gothic style banks in Victoria.
The building has nine main rooms and a period-style bathroom with claw bath, hydronic heating in each room and a paved backyard which can accommodate parking for up to 4 vehicles.
Anthony Carbone of CVA said the sale represents a substantial building rate of $6,315.79 per square metre.

Heritage-listed Gothic corner building sold

A five-storey, fully leased and restored heritage building in Sydney CBD’s prized Kent Street is on the market through Savills.
The <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property/332-kent-st-sydney-nsw-2000" target="_blank">332 Kent Street</a> building would appeal to investors looking to take advantage of the growth in the B-grade office market and secure a foothold in the Sydney CBD, according to listing agents are Graeme Russell and Tim Grosmann of Savills Australia.
The Western Corridor in Sydney’s CBD is known for its architectural beauty with its high concentration of heritage-listed buildings.

Property NSW has announced the lease sale of a heritage-listed commercial property in The Rocks with the funds to be utilised to improve the Sydney Harbour foreshore.
The <a href="https://www.realcommercial.com.au/property-offices-nsw-sydney-502585746" target="_blank">16-18 Grosvenor St</a> property, formerly known as the Housing Board Building, is listed on the State Heritage Register. It was built in 1921 to house the Resumed Properties Department which was responsible for the resumption of land for the Department of Lands and played a major part in reshaping The Rocks and Millers Point.
It would be sold through a tender closing on November 8 and is being offered via a 99-year lease.
“The Rocks and Darling Harbour are two of the State’s most popular tourism precincts and we must continue to invest in them to ensure the visitor experience exceeds expectations,” said Brett Newman, CEO of Property NSW.
In 2015, the NSW government said that proceeds from the divestment of some select government-owned assets in The Rocks would be allocated to the Restart NSW fund, with at least $200 million reserved for the Circular Quay ferry wharf upgrade. 
“New developments along the Harbour foreshore must be complemented by ongoing investment to maintain and conserve our existing assets,” Newman said.
“The sale via long-term lease will deliver immediate funding to invest in our precincts while ensuring the property remains in government hands and is subject to heritage protections.”
The property has a Conservation Management Plan endorsed by the Heritage Council of NSW to guide any purchaser’s plans for the property.

State Planning Minister Anthony Roberts says Governor David Hurley has signed off on a heritage listing for the property.
The government is now moving to restore it.
“From there we’ll start to, of course, protect the site further, rebuild it, and turn it into a destination for people to go and see how people in the past used to live and work,” he tells Ray.
Ray has thanked the Minister and the government for preserving the historic location.

The site comes with a single storey outbuilding, possibly the earliest timber cottage on the site circa 1806, <a href="https://www.propertyobserver.com.au/https://www.flickr.com/photos/nikabuz/37058129814" target="_blank">maybe the oldest timber cottage known to survive in Australia</a>.
